WHOIS lookup — frequently asked questions
What is a WHOIS domain lookup?
It shows the public registration record of a domain: which registrar manages it, when it was registered, when it expires and which nameservers it uses. Think of it like the land record of a plot.
What information does a WHOIS record show?
The registrar, registration date, expiry date, last update, status codes (for example a transfer lock) and nameservers. Some records also show the owner's organisation or country.
How do I look up a domain?
Type the full domain, such as example.com, in the box above and press "Search Whois". You do not need www or https://.
Why are some details hidden?
Privacy laws and registrar privacy services hide personal details such as name, email and phone. The registrar, dates and status are still shown.
What do the status codes mean?
"client transfer prohibited" means the domain is locked against transfer. "active" or "ok" means it works normally. "pending delete" or "redemption period" means it expired and may be deleted soon.
How do I update the WHOIS details of my own domain?
Change them at the registrar where the domain is registered. If your domain is with WEB DATA HOSTS, message us and we will update it. Changes usually show within a day.
The domain I want is taken. What now?
Try another extension such as .net or .shop, or add a word to the name. Our domain search suggests ideas. Please do not send unwanted messages to domain owners.
Can I check a domain before transferring it to you?
Yes. Use our domain transfer page — it checks the lock, the 60-day rule and the expiry date, and tells you what to fix first.
Where does this data come from?
From RDAP, the official registration data service that replaced old WHOIS servers. Some country extensions, such as .bd, do not offer it yet.
